- Price creeps close to larger units on sale
The Night the Power Went Out in Tulsa
Darryl works remote from his house just north of downtown Tulsa. Last November, a transformer blew somewhere in his neighborhood at 2 PM on a Tuesday. No warning, no storm, just—click—and his monitors went dark.
His laptop battery had maybe 40 minutes left. His phone was at 23%. And his Zoom call with the Denver office was in twenty minutes.
“I remembered I had the RIVER 2 Max in the garage from a camping trip,” Darryl told me. “Brought it inside, plugged in my monitor, my laptop charger, my phone, and the Wi-Fi router. Boom—back online in under five minutes.”
He finished his call, worked the rest of the afternoon, and still had 30% left when the power came back at 7 PM. His neighbors were sitting in the dark. Darryl had been answering emails.
“That little box saved me from taking PTO,” he said. “Paid for itself in one afternoon.”

What We Liked
Double the battery, same charging time. The RIVER 2 Max has twice the capacity of the regular RIVER 2—512Wh vs 256Wh—but somehow charges in the same 60 minutes. That’s not a typo. EcoFlow figured out how to push more power without cooking the battery. You go from empty to full during lunch.
Three AC outlets makes a real difference. The regular RIVER 2 has two. The Max has three. That doesn’t sound like much until you’re trying to run a lamp, a laptop charger, and a fan at the same time. The third outlet turns this from “emergency backup” into “legitimate worksite power.”
CPAP users, this is your jam. A typical CPAP without a humidifier draws about 40W. The RIVER 2 Max will run that for 10+ hours. Add a humidifier and you’re still looking at a solid night’s sleep. One charge, one night, zero worries.
X-Boost to 1000W opens up possibilities. We’re talking toaster ovens, coffee makers, hair dryers on low, electric kettles. Not indefinitely—you’ll drain the battery in 30-45 minutes—but for quick tasks, it works.
Still portable enough to carry one-handed. 13.4 pounds isn’t featherlight, but it’s manageable. The handle is comfortable, the unit is compact, and you won’t need a dolly.
What Could Be Better
Solar charging is still slow. 220W max input means 2-3 hours in perfect sun for a full charge. For a 512Wh battery, that’s reasonable. But if you’re trying to live off-grid, you’ll want panels that can push more power than this thing can accept.
The weight starts to matter. 7.7 pounds (the regular RIVER 2) is “toss it in your backpack.” 13.4 pounds is “carry it to the car, maybe think twice about hiking with it.” It’s not heavy, but it’s not forgettable either.
Price competition is fierce. At $369, you’re getting into the territory where sales on larger units (the DELTA 2 at $699 with 1024Wh) start looking tempting. Double your money for almost double the capacity isn’t a bad deal.
Runtime Estimates
| Device | Runtime |
|---|---|
| Smartphone (15W) | 29+ charges |
| Laptop (50W) | ~8.5 hours |
| CPAP without humidifier (40W) | ~10.5 hours |
| CPAP with humidifier (90W) | ~4.5 hours |
| 50” LED TV (80W) | ~5 hours |
| Mini fridge (75W avg) | ~5.5 hours |
| Refrigerator full-size (150W avg) | ~2.5 hours |
| Coffee maker via X-Boost (800W) | ~30 minutes |
Who Should Buy This
Car campers who’ve outgrown the entry-level stuff. If you’re tired of rationing phone charges or want to run a small fan all night, the Max is the upgrade that actually makes sense.
Remote workers who need backup power. One RIVER 2 Max will run your entire home office—laptop, monitor, router, phone—for a full workday. Maybe two.
CPAP users who travel. The 10+ hour runtime means you can sleep through the night anywhere. Hotel power goes out? You’re fine. Camping? Also fine.
Who should look elsewhere: If you’re trying to run a fridge during an extended outage, get a DELTA 2 or larger. If you want something you can throw in a backpack for hiking, get the regular RIVER 2.
The Verdict
The RIVER 2 Max lives in the sweet spot that most power stations miss. It’s powerful enough to be useful for real work, but light enough to actually be portable. It charges in an hour, lasts for years, and costs less than a car payment.
Darryl in Tulsa didn’t buy it for emergencies. He bought it for camping. But when the power went out on a Tuesday afternoon, it paid for itself in one afternoon of not burning PTO.
That’s the thing about good tools—you don’t always know when you’ll need them. But when you do, you’re glad you bought the right one.
Rating: 4.7/5 — Loses points for solar limitations and weight creep, but wins big on the “just works” factor.
